It's time to part ways with an employee. The reasons for an employment separation can range from an employee's decision to resign (with or without notice), or a Dealer's decision to end the employment relationship due to a myriad of reasons, including an employee's work rule violations, unacceptable performance, position elimination, reduction in workforce, inability to perform the job duties because of a disability, or other legitimate business reasons.

When faced with a separation, there are many considerations, including: Should you confirm the employee's resignation in writing? If the employee abandoned his or her job, should you send a termination letter? And when is the effective date of the termination? If you are making the decision to terminate, have you properly documented the rationale for that decision? Have you considered any legal risks associated with the resignation or termination decision? Should you provide any severance? What are best practices for exit interviews? How do you deliver the termination decision to the employee? How much information should be provided in response to applications for unemployment compensation benefits?
